| French polishing is the age old technique of applying shellac in order to produce a mirror like finish on fine furniture. Example of this type of finish can be seen on American Federalist furniture of the 1700’s and 1800’s. Shellac is produced by the Lac Bug in Asia and India. It is still hand harvested and refined.
Prior to 1920, most protective finishes were either shellac or a spirit varnish. After the 1920’s only the finest furniture was finished with shellac. Lacquer was introduced in around 1920. Polyurethane was introduced after 1945.
The application technique is accomplished by hand with literally hundreds of micro small layers applied rapidly that melt into one another. The effect is stunning.
I stock many different color shades of shellac and mix my own formula. I look forward to restoring your shellac finish.
