What is Conservation

Conservation of antique furniture is the act of delaying the inevitable deterioration of the piece.
This is a three part approach involving:
  1. Treatment
  2. Documentation
  3. Preservation
Treatment is accomplished in accordance with the code of ethics of the American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works (AIC). The keys to treatment are stabilizing the piece and reversibility of the treatment.

I set strict standards and rules for myself when working on your pieces:
Conservation:

  • Maintain the integrity of the piece.
  • Stabilize the piece in its present state.
  • Avoid unnecessary repairs.
Treatment:
  • Commitment to the object’s historic, physical, and aesthetic integrity.
  • Sustain reversibility and stability of materials used.
  • Retain the visual harmony of the piece.
Documentation:
  • Describe the damage and condition of the piece.
  • Document the treatment protocol.
  • Describe the condition after treatment.
Preservation:
  • Preservation is the maintenance of objects in an unchanged state.
  • Prevent deterioration. Preserve the piece for future generations.
  • Assess the light and humidity threat.
  • Advise the client on care.
